I’m just as bad as anyone when it comes to wanting to stay in bed all day on a rainy day. Nothing is better than making some hot cocoa, snuggle up with a good read and listening to some vinyls… except maybe searching for your new home! I know it sounds crazy and gross but here are a few key reasons why its actually BEST to look at homes in the rain.
When it comes to making sure that your roof is in good shape and will keep you dry on a rainy day is to actually have a rainy day to check it… well I guess you could get up there with a water hose but ain’t nobody got time for that! Also it is important that just because it is a “NEW” roof doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a reliable roof. I always recommend that you get a home inspector to check your roof before purchasing a home!
Disclaimer: I, James Mann, hereby state that I am not recommending that you climb up on the roof in 40mph winds on a rainy day or go up there with a water hose! If you decide to buy the home and you choose to go up there with your licensed inspector, so be it. Also, don’t sit in a full bathtub and use a hair dryer.
2. Get Your Mind on the Gutters ????
The only time you can have your mind in the gutters and your spouse be okay with it is probably when it comes to purchasing a new home. It can often be very difficult to tell how the rain will fall off the roof especially when its not raining! Knowing how the rain falls can be very important when determining if it will cause issues with flooding. Sometimes walking out of your front door in the rain can turn into walking through a waterfall. Trust me it wont look as nice as this!
Knowing how the rain falls before you purchase your home is important and can determine if you will need to invest in repairing your gutters or installing new ones all together as soon as you move in.
3. Swimming to your Front Door? PASS!
You know as relaxed as this guy looks chances are you don’t want standing water in your front or back yard! After it has been steadily raining for a few days or when there are flash floods happening you need to know how your yard drains and also how your neighbors yards drain. Chances are you don’t want to have to invest in a boat just to get from the entrance of your subdivision to your house. Just because your not in a flood zone doesn’t mean your area won’t flood!
These are just a few of the reason’s why searching for a home in the rain is the BEST time to search for a home. I didn’t even list potential crawl space issues, seeing natural lighting, potential basement flooding, danger of mold due to moisture damage and much more! I know it doesn’t sound like any fun searching for a home in the rain but it is one of the best times to look and… my mom says I’m fun ???? so I can do my best to keep you entertained in a downpour!
